Who is a gestational surrogate

A gestational surrogate is a woman who helps carry a baby for another individual or couple. The baby is created using the genetic material of either the intended parents or that of an egg or sperm donor. A gestational surrogate does not use her own egg or genetic material to create the baby, and is not related to the baby biologically. The baby is unrelated to her own genetic code, and is implanted via the process of IVF. At the end of her journey, the intended parents assume the legal parental rights and custody over the child.

A gestational surrogate is typically considered once a parent has exhausted all other options to conceive a child on their own and now must resort to the means of assisted reproduction or IVF and a surrogate mother. On average 1 out of every 6 couples struggle with some form of infertility.

Becoming a gestational surrogate has the opportunity to change the lives of the family who is in need and the surrogates’ life as well. The process and result are immensely rewarding.

Each individual who chooses to become a surrogate typically is a compassionate individual who enjoys being pregnant. Many women would say they are not doing this journey for the money and have altruistic reasons why they would commit their time and body to helping another family. Additionally, a surrogate is incentivized throughout her journey with compensation for her inconvenience, discomforts, and risks she may endure.
