Once your full application is received, you will meet with a surrogacy agency coordinator to review your next steps and any questions.

Do You Have Your Pregnancy and Delivery Medical Records Ready?

Your pregnancy and delivery medical records are an essential piece to determining your eligibility to become a surrogate mother. After an initial exploratory call, we will begin collecting your pregnancy and delivery medical records to review your medical history for approval.

Do You Have a Current Pap Smear?

Another vital piece of information will be for you to have a current Pap smear. MIUSA Surrogacy requires this to be newer than 12 months old with normal results. While updating your Pap smear, plan to discuss your interest in becoming a surrogate with your doctor. This is a great opportunity to discuss any possible risks or address any minor medical needs before pursuing a surrogacy journey.

Do You Have Support?

Do you have adequate support, or is your husband on board with the idea? Please discuss with your loved ones if they can support you during this opportunity. They will be expected to provide emotional support, or if you are in a long-term committed relationship, your partner may need to be a part of the legal contract and subject to possible medical and psychological screening.

Frequently Asked Become a Surrogate Questions

Can I be a surrogate if I’ve never been pregnant?

No. All surrogates must have had at least one healthy, full-term pregnancy.

Will I feel attached to the baby?

Most surrogates don’t feel attached, as they enter the journey with clear expectations. Our team supports you emotionally throughout.

Can I keep working during the pregnancy?

Yes, many surrogates work throughout their pregnancy — as long as their OB clears them for it.

How long does the whole process take?

From application to delivery, surrogacy typically takes 14–20 months, depending on matching, medical steps, and pregnancy.

What if I carry twins?

You’ll receive additional compensation and medical support. It’s all outlined in your contract.

What Is the Matching Process and Timeline?

Once you have completed our application process and are ready for matching, you will be presented with a match with a family who has been waiting for an available surrogate. The average time to complete our application process depends greatly on the readiness of the surrogate, but it can take up to 3 months while we obtain all necessary medical records. Once you are an approved surrogate, you will be offered a match meeting immediately with a family who has been waiting. We will match based on your unique preferences, and values to ensure they align with the intended parents’ preferences for a successful match!

What Is the Medical Clearance Process?

After you are matched with your intended parents, you will begin a comprehensive medical screening process with their fertility clinic of choice. You will complete bloodwork and a physical, which typically includes a saline sonogram. On some occasions, the fertility clinic will also want to complete a hysteroscopy or other testing to ensure you are physically ready to become a surrogate. If you have a long-term partner, the fertility clinic may require them to complete appropriate bloodwork as well for infectious diseases. Lastly, you will be required to complete a psychological evaluation to determine your emotional readiness and stability for becoming a surrogate.

What Are My Responsibilities as a Surrogate?

As a surrogate, you will be required to have basic communication skills with all parties to ensure a successful surrogacy journey. You will be required to attend all medical appointments ordered by the fertility clinic and OBGYN. You will be required to administer medication to prep your body for embryo transfer and your surrogate pregnancy.

What Will My Compensation Be?

All surrogates receive the same compensation package. However, a few variances will apply if you are a first-time surrogate or an experienced surrogate candidate. Additionally, if you carry multiples, this will increase your surrogate compensation. You will be paid your actual lost wages which varies across surrogates. You will receive additional benefits such as a life insurance policy which you may choose to keep beyond the surrogacy process. All expenses related to medical and travel will be covered by the intended parents.

How Does This Work Legally?

As a surrogate you will be required to enter in a contractual surrogacy agreement with the intended parent. This surrogacy contract will outline your responsibilities and compensation, as well as the intended parents’ responsibilities and future parentage. Once you are pregnant, you will also be required to work with the attorneys for the appropriate paperwork to ensure the parents establish their parentage with the courts. It is vital you reside and give birth in a surrogate friendly state in order for the parentage to be assigned appropriately. Made in the USA Surrogacy will provide referrals to your individual legal representation for the legal process.
